OTF Guide

Learn about what makes an OTF knife so unique and how it works.

Normandy Knives

What is OTF?

OTF(short forOut-The-Front) means the blade deploys and retracts straight out of the front of the handle with the push of a switch. Unlike folding knives, which swing open on a pivot, OTFs use a spring-loaded, double-action mechanism that makes them quick to deploy and easy to stow.

How does an OTF Work?

An OTF uses an internal spring system connected to a sliding switch. When you push the switch forward, the spring engages and drives the blade out of the handle. Pulling the switch back retracts the blade into the handle.

Most modern OTF knives are double-action, meaning the same switch controls both deployment and retraction. This allows for quick, one-handed operation with a smooth and controlled feel.
